MHTI Projects

Many activities of the Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland were project based and resulted in significant benefits for mining heritage in Ireland. The journal and other publications have many papers. In particular, the book ‘Celebrating 20 years of the Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland’ covers all the projects in some detail. Therefore, the following listing is a simple orientation or reference to the various projects, noting who were any partners in the project and providing some outline context.

Allihies Man Engine House Conservation

The engine house at the Mountain Mine, Allihies, County Cork, constructed in 1862, is the most intact, surviving example of a purpose-built Cornish-type man engine house worldwide. It was consolidated in 2002-3 by Cornish contractors, Darrock and Brown, under the aegis of the MHTI which was responsible for raising the capital that included private donations and financial support from the Heritage Council, Cork County Council and West Cork Leader.
